I'm not saying that creating commercial art is a bad thing, it's great. I'm saying you just need to be able to keep yourself in check, if you find you are drawing something completely boring and stale... turn it around and find something positive to take and apply elsewhere in your art so as to continue to grow as an artist.
I really should value that freedom, though as I'm not aggressively pursuing a career in art at the moment,
I have plenty of time to just muck around with my own ideas

Couldn't have put it better myself. I think that you draw for yourself is a really positive way of working - i'd like to be that way myself, but so far i haven't quite got there.
"I just struggle when it comes to drawing or referring to topics (such as anime) that I don't really have any extended interest in."
I'm similar with topics i'm not interested in, too... i think seeing as neither of us are drawing for profit (at the moment!), we can pretty much draw what we like. I'm sure when i'm employed i'll be drawing all sorts of crap that bores me rigid, so i ought to appreciate this period of freedom while i'm in it.
"If you are interested in anime, boobs and anime boobs. I say go for it!
*grins* Thankyou. I've been leaning more towards video game style art recently, but i'm sure that eventually my testosterone will kick in and i'll start drawing mature artwork again.

I would rather take my art in the direction I'm wanting to go with it, rather than learn how to draw in a certain style simply because it is what has become popular.

b) Ah, i see! Yes, there's no beating around the bush with 'Cut Man' as a title. He's a cut man, a man who cuts. Cutting is what this man does. If you're planning on a series of Megaman tie-ins, i'd be interested to see what you make of 'Guts Man'.
c) Thankyou. Not sure it'll be entirely to your taste, but there's a lot of work in there so there might be something of interest to you.

For whatever reason I felt compelled to draw a man with large shears for hands. The name "Cut Man" only seemed fitting, fully aware of it's ties to the megaman franchise. It was actually the start of a few pieces I planned on doing, loosely affiliated with megaman boss names.
Thanks again for the comment, I'll be sure to check out your gallery.

BTW, you may be interested to know that 'Cut Man' was a boss in the very first Megaman game. He's adorable, despite running about the place with scissors (attached to his head).

We get a groovy festival this year. @_@;
So I am happy. Though its cost is making my credit card very unhappy.
